The Cost of a Bathroom Remodel | The 2016 U.S. Houzz Bathroom Trends Study

When it comes to home renovation, after kitchens, the most popular room in the house to renovate is the bathroom. The cost of a bathroom renovation can often pay for itself in terms of resale, with renovations in some hot real estate markets returning over 100% of the cost.

The website Houzz recently completed their 2016 U.S. Houzz Bathroom Trends study, Led by Nino Sitchinava, Houzz's principal economist, this year's study found that homeowners are craving stylish spaces with luxurious finishes and big showers. With the “stay-cation” trend growing, homeowners are opting for spa-like luxury with options like exotic marble countertops, multi-head showers, digital controls and even mood lighting in the shower.

One interesting fact the study uncovered is that it appears that bathtubs are out with fewer than half of respondents who renovated using their tubs. The study surveyed more than 2100 Houzz users in the U.S. who are homeowners and are either in the midst of a bathroom project, have recently completed one or are planning one.

Let's delve into the numbers and see what the typical cost of a Bathroom remodel is and what the big trends in bath design are for 2016 and beyond!

So How Much Does A Bathroom Renovation Cost?

The most important question for most homeowners considering a new bathroom is “what's the cost of a bath renovation?” Obviously, there's no definitive answer and prices can vary widely depending on the finishes chosen as well as the region of the country the home is located in, as both material and labor can vary by location. Nationally the average budget and final price for a master bath renovation are between $14,000 and $35,000. Many homeowners will spend more and many will spend less, but the majority of master bath projects fall into the $5000 - $50,000 price range.

So, Why Do People Take On A Bath Remodel?

There are lots of reasons that homeowners decide to pull the trigger on a bathroom remodel. The top three are:

  • They're fed up! They just can't stand their old bathroom, and it's time for a change!

  • It was a wish list item since they purchased their home and they finally have the means to make it happen.

  • The old bathroom simply wore out or broke down.

Whatever the motivation, the cost of a bathroom renovation can be worth it. Not only regarding enjoyment for the current homeowner, but remodeling can add to a home's luxury, appeal, and value when it comes time to sell.

The Trends In Bathroom Design

As mentioned earlier, the trends in bathroom design are all about luxury, style, and comfort. A full 80% of homeowners are replacing major features like showers, floors, countertops, and sinks. Tubs and tub/shower combos are being replaced by larger, more luxurious showers with features like rainfall shower heads, dual showers, multi-head systems with digital controls, and even mood lighting.

Ceramic or porcelain tile is still the most popular choice for flooring with stone tile or slab coming close. Marble, travertine, granite and slate are the top three flooring options (with granite and slate tying for third.

High-tech showers aren't the only place where technology is making an impact. One in five renovations includes a high-tech toilet with technology offering options like self-cleaning features that can help homeowners skip the scrub brush!

In The Bathroom, Style Matters!

Not surprisingly 90 percent of homeowners who renovate their master bathroom change the style when the upgrade. The most popular styles currently in favor are contemporary, modern, transitional, and traditional. In fact, the most important factor stated by 81 percent of homeowners surveyed by Houzz were style and beauty. Fewer owners (46%) value a master bath renovation for adding to the resale value of the home.

The fact is, your bathroom is a personal space where you spend a good amount of time during the day. Caring about your bathroom's style and beauty makes sense. As more homeowners opt to spend more time in their homes, a spa-like bathroom can be a sanctuary space where they can relax in beautiful surroundings, under a rainfall shower head and release the tension of the day.
