Choosing a Shower Head For A New Bath or Bathroom Remodel

Choosing a Shower Head For A New Bath

Finding The Right Shower Head For A Bathroom Remodel

Whether It's new construction or a bathroom remodel, the right shower head is an essential but often overlooked luxury that should be considered. Your shower is where you start your day, and nothing is more relaxing than an invigorating shower experience.

The right showerhead can start your day off right. Today, there are dozens of excellent shower head options on the market. From handheld models to multi-head shower systems with a little research, you can choose the perfect model to make your morning a lot nicer, and you can even save water!

In a federally mandated effort to promote water conservation, new shower heads must flow at a rate of no more than 2.5 gallons per minute. However, that doesn't mean you have to sacrifice comfort.

Let's take a look at some of the main showerhead types on the market today. Learn about their pros and cons to help you make an informed decision when it's time for a bathroom remodel or update.

Today's Shower Heads Do It All!

A new shower head can make your morning ritual relaxing, even fun! There are a large variety of new shower heads on the market that do everything. Some offer a strong, steady stream, or an intense pulsing spray. Many have relaxing massage options.

When shopping, you'll find a wide price range from less than $50 to hundreds of dollars for a multi-head system. Here are some of the most common types.

Fixed Shower Heads

A fixed or wall mounted shower head is what most of us currently have in our homes. It's a no-frills shower head, typically smaller in size, without the bells and whistles.

Some “fancier” models offer mixed-functioning that allows you to change the spray pattern, typically from a very concentrated Massage setting to a gentle wide spray pattern.

Hand-held Shower heads

Hand-held shower heads are attached to the wall and held in a holder. The head is attached to a four to a six-foot hose and can be removed from the holder. Most have adjustable spray patterns and some feature cushioned or textured handles for easier handling when wet,

Hand-held shower heads are perfect for older homeowners or those who are mobility impaired, washing young children, and even bathing the family dog!

Rainfall and Waterfall Shower Heads

Rainshower heads are “officially” fixed, they're much larger in size ranging from 6 to 12-inches. With a rain shower head, you'll increase coverage with more water gently hitting your skin, leaving you feeling warmer and more relaxed in the shower.

Rain shower heads can be mounted on the wall or ceiling, however, to get the full effect, a ceiling mount is recommended. You also have two options – single or multi-function. A single function is best for ceiling mounting, with multi-function being the better choice for a wall mount.

Dual Shower Heads

Dual shower heads are a combination of hand-held, fixed heads. Today, manufacturers are even offering fixed shower heads combined with rain showerheads. The only potential drawback to a dual shower head is that the larger they are, the more it will affect the water pressure. If you want to run both heads at the same time, check the specs to make sure that it's possible.

Filtered Shower Heads

If you suffer from dry skin and frizzy hair, a filtered shower head is just the ticket! These are designed to reduce the amount of chlorine, scale, and hard water that comes through your shower. If you suffer from hard water, a filtered shower head can resolve the problem. Filtered shower heads make your shower feel more relaxing, and it'll return the luster to your curly locks.

Many filtered shower heads have the filter built directly into the head. However, if you love your existing shower head, but still have a hard water problem, there are inline filter systems available that can attach directly to your current showerhead.

If you're planning a bathroom remodel, take some time and research your shower head options. It might not seem like much, but the right shower head can make a real difference in your day!
