Creating a Spa-Like Master Bath With Improved Functionality

When homeowners seek to add their personality to their home, they generally turn to two key areas: the kitchen, which is the heart of the home, or the master en suite, where you typically start and end your day. Here at Toulmin Kitchen & Bath, we love taking our client's homes to the next level with a kitchen or bathroom remodel!

We recently updated the master bathroom of our client's Honeysuckle Lane home in Tuscaloosa. They came to us seeking to visually update their master bathroom. They wanted us to remove their old jetted tub and expand the shower to give the space a more modern feel and add functionality.

Bathroom Remodeling: Transforming a 1980s Master Bathroom

Our client's original bathroom was dated. From the beige walls and white ceramic floor tile to the outdated jetted tub, this bathroom was ready for a refresh! The small corner shower and oversized tub lacked the functionality they needed.

We met with the homeowners to begin the design process and discuss their goals for the space. While they wanted to update the room aesthetically, they wanted to keep the original footprint of the bathroom. Because we didn’t have the cost of moving any plumbing, we could allocate the budget to upgraded finishes and materials.

Creating A Modern Spa-Like Master Retreat

We started by removing the existing tub and vanity, then opened up the shower space. We then modernized the flooring with a large format non-slip porcelain tile in a natural marble pattern. The smaller grout lines gave the room an elegant modern look.

Having a freestanding tub was an essential feature for the homeowner. We replaced the dated tub with a large freestanding double slipper soaking tub. The freestanding polished chrome tub filler included a handheld shower nozzle for rinsing off. The high four-panel window provides plenty of natural light, and we added an open shelf and hooks for storing towels.

We kept the dressing table/vanity next to the tub and updated the cabinetry, seating, and mirrors. We replaced the dated porcelain and metal hardware with stylish, brushed brass pulls, which work perfectly with the flat panel drawers and doors and add to the mixed metals aesthetic of the design.

The existing shower was in the corner directly across from the tub. We removed the walls and the second vanity that was originally next to the shower. We then opened the space and created a larger shower, which included a glass-topped half wall and opened directly into the room instead of the original corner placement. The shower features large panel porcelain walls and smaller marble floor tiles. It's a much more functional layout and much larger than the original shower stall.

The glass walls provide an open feeling to the space, and the porcelain tile walls balance perfectly with the smaller shower floor tiles.

A second vanity next to the shower also features a new mirror and updated sconces. The lighting, including the sconces around the vanity mirrors and the stunning chandelier, were made by Visual Comfort. The quartz countertops are beautiful, durable, and add functionality to the space.

Every Element Working In Harmony

We took this drab, beige dated bathroom and transformed it into a highly functional, aesthetically beautiful, and relaxing space. The new pale gray walls pick up the veining in the porcelain flooring and shower surround. The glass shower walls give the space an open feel. The sizable stand-alone soaking tub is the perfect place to relax after a long day. By removing the large dated tub surround, we opened the room and improved the flow while enhancing functionality. Best of all, the homeowners absolutely love their new spa-like master retreat!
