Replacing Your Home’s Windows? Here’s What to Expect.

So, you’ve decided to replace your home’s windows. Congratulations! Now, do you know what happens next?

The truth is, installing new replacement windows is time-consuming and can be expensive. But when the process is completed properly, your new windows will add beauty, functionality, and value to your home.

Since most Alabama homeowners only go through the window replacement process once or twice, it’s likely you may not know what to expect. To ensure your window replacement process goes smoothly, the experts at Toulmin Windows & Doors prepared this guide, so you’ll have the knowledge to make informed decisions along the way.

Starting the Window Replacement Process

Replacement windows can improve your home's energy efficiency and comfort, enhance your safety and security, increase the value of your property, and help you transform your home into everything you've dreamed it could be.

Before starting the actual window replacement process, you'll want to do a little research. As with any home improvement project, knowledge is power. You want to know all the steps and understand the process to make an informed decision.

The first step is selecting the types of windows that will work best for your home aesthetically and functionally. Look to websites and home magazines for inspiration based on your home's architectural style and your personal taste. If you're unsure how to proceed, your installation company can help. They can show you your options and help you choose the perfect window to meet your needs.

Before the Installers Arrive

Once you have chosen your replacement windows, you'll need to confirm the date and time of installation. Before your installers arrive, you'll want to take a few steps to make your window replacement go smoothly.

  • Clearly mark any original or special windows you’d like saved.

If there are any windows, like original stained or leaded glass windows, that you'd like saved, make sure you clearly mark them.

  • Ensure children and pets are in a safe place.

The installation process, while generally quick, can be disruptive, especially if you have kids or pets. You might want to have them cared for in a separate location during the installation process. Kids or pets roaming around the house can not only get in the way, but they can also potentially get injured. Lock away any small valuables or fragile items, and cover large items that can't be moved away from the windows.

Beginning the Installation Process

After choosing your replacement windows and scheduling installation, it's time to consider the installation methods and options for putting your new windows in place. The complexity of your window replacement project will determine the best installation method for you.

For example, when replacing a casement window, a pocket installation is the easiest option. For a more complex upgrade, like adding a bay or bow window in the kitchen, you'll need to look into a full-frame installation. Full-frame installation takes more time and is more labor-intensive as it requires work inside and outside your house. However, it also allows for greater flexibility.

Most window replacement projects can be accomplished in a single day. If your project is particularly complex, or you choose the option of full-frame replacements, installation may extend into a second day.

Window Replacement: Day One

It’s always a good idea for the homeowner to be on-site the day of installation, that way you can answer any questions your crew might have. If you work from home and have a home office, ask the installers to start with the windows closest to your work area so that you can get back to work quickly.

You must trust the company you have chosen to do the work. The best way to manage your project is to let your installers do their job and stay out of the way. Staying within calling distance is a good idea, but it’s best for you to allow them the room to do their work.

Here are some considerations for a smooth first day and the steps involved in the process:

  • Meet the project manager and walk through your home before work begins. Go over each window to ensure everything is in place, and ready to go.

  • Check that the installers have taken the proper precautions to protect your home and that drop cloths have been placed to protect your belongings.

  • Ask that additional drop cloths be placed outside to protect your landscape if you have flower beds or landscaping,

  • A multi-person crew will likely be onsite. One team will bring in new windows as the other team removes your existing windows.

  • As the removal of the old windows continues, installation of the new windows will begin.

  • Ropes for the sashes will be cut, and weights will drop to the bottom of the window pocket. New windows will be placed into the opening, leveled, and nailed in place.

  • There is no need for supervision on your part. However, periodically check in with your project manager so you can answer any questions they may have.

Depending on the size of your crew, at the end of the day, you should expect 12 to 15 windows to be removed and replaced. You do not want any windows removed and boarded over. Request each window space be filled with a new window, or ask for the old windows to be left in place if the job moves into to a second day.

Window Replacement: Day Two

Most window replacement projects can be completed in a single day. If not, or if you have a more complex job, like installing a bay or bow window, the work may continue for a second day.

In most mid-sized homes, the second day will conclude the process.

  • Installers will arrive early and continue your project, removing and installing windows.

  • When the removal team is finished, they will begin installing exterior trim on your windows. The exterior trim, also known as cladding, provides a tight seal against the weather. Depending on your contract and your needs, this step may be optional.

  • Your home is broom cleaned, and each window is tested by opening and closing them.

Maintaining Your New Windows

Purchasing replacement windows is a big decision that will impact the quality and value of your home. It's important to understand everything about your windows including the best way to care for the glass and window frame, the proper way to clean your windows, and how to properly operate your windows including opening, closing, and locking. Your installation team should cover all of this with you before they leave.
