Designer Jay Young's New Tuscaloosa Home Featured in StyleBlueprint!

An Interview With Jay Young of Toulmin Cabinetry & Design by StyleBlueprint

When Jay Young, owner of Toulmin Cabinetry & Design, began work on his new home in Tuscaloosa's Waterfall neighborhood, he was striving for a design that was clean and classic, inspired by the homes he and his father had built for clients throughout the area. The Young home is a showcase for the work Jay loves to do as a designer and was the subject of a recent feature article in StyleBlueprint. In the profile, Jay discussed his approach to building and design, which focuses on making the home an extension of the family, not just a place to live.

The Young's home is rooted in traditional Southern architecture, with a touch of eclectic charm. Whether it be a pop of color or a bold fixture serving as a statement piece, the traditional style of Jay's designs are never boring. Jay tells StyleBlueprint that the overall aesthetic of the home was inspired by the work he has done for clients over the years, making it a stunning showcase for his work and the company.

Toulmin Cabinetry & Design is known for its gorgeous kitchen and bathroom designs, so it's no surprise the StyleBlueprint profile on the Young family home began in their beautiful kitchen. With a palette of white, gold and natural wood, the kitchen is both sophisticated and welcoming. Sierra Pacific windows provide the room with natural light and give the kitchen an open and airy feeling. The gold Gabby light fixtures above the kitchen island create a bold focal point as you enter the kitchen. The island bar is perfectly situated for entertaining or a casual family meal. As any family that cooks a lot will tell you, ample storage is a must. Jay chose cabinetry with deep drawers below the counters for storing the family's many kitchen gadgets.

Jay believes that high-quality products are key to a project, whether it’s building a new home or remodeling a kitchen. Choosing lesser quality materials and fixtures to cut a bit of cost doesn't always get the look and longevity homeowners are seeking, which is why you will find top-of-the-line products in the Young's kitchen, such as Jenn-Air professional appliances, Montclair Danby marble countertops and Shiloh custom cabinetry.

The reason behind Jay's reputation as a top designer of kitchens and bathrooms is evident in the Young home master bath and downstairs powder room. The master bath is a bright open space, anchored by a modern and pure-white freestanding tub. Across is a large mirror and vanity offering plenty of storage. An original piece of artwork in the center, one of Jay's favorite details, adds a touch of originality and sophistication. Custom tile work and clean, crisp details make this master bath feel more like a spa than something you'd find in a family home.

The downstairs powder room, one of Jay's favorite rooms, is far more bright and bold than the rest of the home. While Jay tends to work in largely neutral palettes, adding a pop of color here and there, especially in smaller rooms, adds interest and allows homeowners an opportunity to show off their style. The powder room here is built around a mirror Jay's wife discovered. Jay added bright blue and metallic wallpaper, a bold blue vanity and geometric patterns throughout.

Bold color and eclectic touches are how Jay, as a designer, creates points of interest in other areas of his home as well. Photos throughout the StyleBlueprint article show a mudroom built-in cabinet with a bold blue paint, and a multi-purpose room adorned with both antiques and modern furniture. Other living spaces featured in StyleBlueprint show comfortable and cozy places to relax and spend time with friends and family, whether its the natural wood beam accents in the living room or the open sitting area on the porch, perfect for spending warm Alabama nights, or the ingenious office space that provides a roomy place for both parents and kids to get their work done.

Jay was raised with an eye for design -- his father built homes in the Tuscaloosa area for more than 20 years and his mother worked in interior design. The StyleBlueprint feature on his family home clearly shows he is carrying on this family tradition with his clean and classic designs.
