How To Choose A Showerhead Style for A Bathroom Renovation

Bathrooms are seen as more important than ever and are the reason for so many home renovation projects today. Our article explores shower types for new homes and remodeling projects.

Types of Showers and Their Benefits

There are two types of showerheads; fixed and handheld. Fixed showerheads include rainshower sliding bar systems, basically, anything that can't be removed from the wall or ceiling. Handheld systems are removable from their wall mounting. They perform well for bathing and offer the benefits of washing pet's and kids, and they make cleaning the shower much easier.  Prices vary widely, and if you're looking for cost savings, there are plenty of sophisticated, stylish and affordable options available when shopping for bathroom fixtures. Consider the following manufacturers, Delta, Danze, Kohler and Hans Grohe but be certain to contact your designer for guidance. Every manufacturer sells lines that provide value as well as "construction grade" lines that leave much to be desired.

Standard Wall Mount – Wall mounts can range from simple designs to elaborate models featuring adjustable angles, multiple spray modes, and even self-cleaning technology.

Top Mounted Fixtures – If you love feeling like you're showering in the rainforest, a top mount fixture is for you. A top mount is either fixed to the ceiling or can be mounted on an extension arm allowing for adjustments.

Sliding Bar Systems – These can be adjusted up and down for each user. It's a great option if you have a family, Is available both in fixed and removable versions, and ensures the perfect shower experience for every family member!

Handheld – Removable from its mounting handheld showers are ideal for bathing but they're also useful for other applications like washing the dog, or the kids! If you're unsure of what you want, handhelds come both as traditional bathroom fixtures and combination fixed head/handheld hybrids.

Shower Panel Systems

One of the hottest bathroom renovation trends right now is to install a Shower System as opposed to a basic shower. A shower system consists of some valves, showerheads, hand showers; body sprays water outlets and volume controls. Think of it as a stand-up Jacuzzi without being under water! Components can vary, and you can customize which jets are used. Many have handheld digital controls and can even include mood lighting and music systems.

Panels are customizable and come pre-configured, or you can design your own specifying the number and placement of spigots (overhead, chest level, knee high, etc.) as well as the spray options. Note that homes that install a shower system tend to use more hot water which can raise your energy costs and often require specialized plumbing which can add to the cost. Retrofit options are available, but you should always seek the advice of a design professional, consider the building codes in your region and pay close attention if you get water from a private well. These systems are a luxury but if your well runs dry in the summer through excessive water use you may have a different opinion on the value of this type of shower. In California, as an example, low flow showers are mandatory. Multiple shower head and rain shower systems can not be used, and retailers will not ship these systems into the state.

Top Showerhead Choices

Showerheads come in a variety of styles, materials, and finishes to fit any décor. Here are the current top five styles of bathroom fixtures used today.

    1. Classic – Antique or classic fixtures like old style brass fixtures, or ornate designs can add a rustic feel to your bathroom. Mixing chrome and porcelain fixtures can provide visual contrast. Combining finishes is especially beautiful in older homes where you are going for a vintage style that reflects the era in which the house was built.

    2. Rainfall Showerheads – Named for the experience it provides, a rainfall head has a large surface area with many perforations. Rainfall heads allow a large quantity of water to rain down without a lot of water pressure. Combining a rainfall head with other fixtures can provide a luxurious spa-like experience!

    3. Shower Panels – As described above, shower panels combine several jets distributing water throughout the shower. The result is an all over bathing experience thanks to modern technology!

    4. Multifunction Heads – Multifunction showerheads offer a customized bathing experience. Typically handheld with adjustable water streams you can choose from multiple setting like pulsating massage, or low-flow pressure. Perfect for families, they can provide a gentle stream for kids and a high-pressure flow for adults.

    5. Handheld – As we age, showering can get difficult. Handheld showerheads detach from the wall so the nozzle can easily reach everywhere. Handheld showers are them ideal for people with injuries or older people with conditions like arthritis.

Today, you have a range of options available at every price point to turn your bathroom into a luxurious place to relax and rejuvenate. Start by deciding which features are worth the expense and speak with your designer or design-build firm. They can show choices, and offer advice on the costs for various options. With the world becoming more complicated and stressful every day, wouldn't it be great to have an oasis of relaxation to come home
