How New U.S. Wood Tariffs Impact Homeowners & Builders in Alabama
If you’ve been planning a home remodel or new build, you may want to keep an eye on what’s happening in the lumber and cabinetry world. Starting this fall, the U.S. will roll out new tariffs on imported wood and cabinetry products, and those changes could ripple through everything from construction costs to project timelines.
So what does that mean for homeowners and builders here in Alabama? In short, imported cabinetry is about to get a lot more expensive, and many of the popular ready-to-assemble (RTA) and mass-produced cabinet lines sold by big-box retailers and online stores will likely see sharp price increases and shipping delays.
The good news? If your cabinetry is built right here in the U.S., you won’t have to worry about international trade policies or global supply chain disruptions. At Toulmin Kitchen & Bath, all of our cabinetry is American-made, so our clients can count on consistent quality, predictable pricing, and local craftsmanship that stands the test of time.
What’s Happening
In July 2025, the U.S. Department of Commerce completed an investigation into the nation’s dependence on imported wood products—everything from raw timber to finished cabinetry. The report found that the U.S. has the resources and capacity to meet domestic demand, but ongoing reliance on cheap imports has weakened our own manufacturing industry, led to mill closures, and created vulnerabilities in the supply chain.
In response, new tariffs are being introduced to rebalance the market and strengthen domestic production. These changes will affect how much builders, remodelers, and homeowners pay for any product that relies on imported wood.
What’s Changing
Beginning October 14, 2025, the following tariffs take effect:
Softwood timber and lumber imports → 10% tariff
Upholstered wood furniture imports → 25% tariff (increasing to 30% in 2026)
Kitchen cabinets and vanities (including individual parts) → 25% tariff, increasing to 50% on January 1, 2026
While some trade partners like the UK, EU, and Japan will see capped rates between 10% and 15%, most imported cabinetry from China, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Brazil will be subject to these full tariffs.
What It Means for Homeowners and Builders
For homeowners, these new tariffs could mean price increases and delays—especially if your remodel or build depends on products sourced overseas. Brands like IKEA, RTA Cabinet Store, and other import-based cabinet suppliers rely on materials and manufacturing outside the U.S.
As a result:
Expect higher prices for imported cabinets and vanities (up to 40–50% higher than current rates).
Prepare for longer shipping times due to customs and international freight adjustments.
Anticipate limited inventory as manufacturers may pause production to adjust to new costs.
Replacement parts and warranty claims could also become more complicated.
If you’ve been drawn to imported or RTA cabinetry because of price, those savings may soon disappear—making U.S.-made cabinetry the smarter investment in the long run.
